What this deck is for

Use it when you have a few minutes to show someone why your business is worth backing. That may be an investor, a bank, a grant panel or a larger company you want as a partner. The order is the one most readers expect, so they can follow you without hunting.

Every figure on these slides is a placeholder. Fill them only with numbers you can show a source for, because a pitch reader will ask.

The slides, in order

  1. Slide 1, cover: a cover slide reading [Company] [does what] for [whom]

    01Cover

Your company, what it does and for whom, in one line. Under it, a sentence a busy reader will remember. Put the round or the purpose in the small label.

  2. Slide 2, problem and answer: a problem solution slide reading [The problem, as the customer feels it]

    02Problem and answer

Two boxes. On the left, who has the problem, how often, and what it costs them. On the right, what you do about it, in one plain sentence.

  3. Slide 3, why now: a side headline slide reading [What changed that makes this possible now]

    03Why now

What changed in the market, in technology or in the rules that makes this possible now. Three short points.

  4. Slide 4, how it works: a features slide reading [How it works, in three steps]

    04How it works

Three steps from the customer's side, with an icon and a few words each.

  5. Slide 5, market: a market size slide reading [Who buys this, and how many of them]

    05Market

Three circles: everyone with the problem, those you can reach, and your goal for this round. Each figure needs its source on the slide.

  6. Slide 6, traction: a three numbers slide reading [What the numbers say, as a sentence]

    06Traction

Three figures, such as paying customers, monthly revenue and growth. Leave a figure as [add the figure] rather than round it up.

  7. Slide 7, team: a team slide reading [Why this team wins this market]

    07Team

The founders, their roles, and what they did before that matters here.

  8. Slide 8, roadmap: a roadmap slide reading [What the money builds]

    08Roadmap

Now, next and later: what is live, the next milestone, and where it goes.

  9. Slide 9, the ask: a ask slide reading [Raising what, to reach which milestone]

    09The ask

The amount, the round, how long it lasts and what it pays for.

  10. Slide 10, close: a closing slide reading [What you want the investor to do next]

    10Close

The next step you want from the reader, and how to reach you.

How to present it

  • Tell it as a story: a problem, a change in the world, your answer, proof, and what the money does.
  • One idea per slide. If a slide needs two headlines, it is two slides.
  • Send the deck as a PDF after the meeting, not before, unless you are asked.

Questions

How many slides should a pitch deck have?

About ten for the meeting. Keep extra detail, such as the full financial model, in an appendix you show only when asked.

Do I need a market size slide?

Most investors expect one. Build it from the customers you can actually reach, and show where each figure comes from.

Can I use this deck for a bank loan?

Yes. Swap the traction slide for your accounts and cash flow, and make the ask the loan, its term and what it pays for.

Use it in Supernatural

Supernatural: everything your business runs on, with Blue as your part-time admin. Present is one of its apps. In your workspace, you ask Blue for “a pitch deck for my company”. Blue starts from this outline, writes in what you give it, and leaves [brackets] where something is missing. Figures you have not given stay as [add the figure], so no number reaches an audience unchecked. Nothing is made until you say yes.
